The biggest breakthrough in problem-solving may be recognising that the problem itself is wrong. The ancient story of Alexander the Great and the Gordian Knot offers a powerful lesson for modern organisations: sometimes the smartest solution isn’t to untangle complexity, but to question why it exists in the first place.
Too often, we respond to inefficient processes by adding another approval, spreadsheet, meeting or piece of technology. We become better at managing the knot instead of asking whether we need it.
Excellence starts with reframing the problem. Is the process creating value, or simply creating activity? What outcome actually matters? And what is the simplest reliable way to achieve it? Sometimes the boldest move isn’t solving the problem better. It’s removing the problem altogether.
