It is now available in e-book format as well. Maybe the audiobook next year….

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus is often attributed to the statement ‘change is the only constant’. I think there’s one more: the role of a leader. Despite the tough expectations from Boards and global challenges rising from war, geopolitical issues, inflation, supply chain issues, to name a few, the role of the Leader remains constant – deliver a stable and strong performing company that is future proof
While we look for the latest trends in technology, explore new growth markets and re-write our leadership playbooks to stay ahead of our competition, there’s one stark factor that we seem to have overlooked: the engagement of our employees who are deploying these new strategies, executing transformation initiatives and overseeing technology transformations.
Unfortunately, the global statistics aren’t great. If we look at the latest 2024 data from Gallup, only 23% of our workforce accounts for engaged employees. The disgruntle disenchanted category represents 15%; and the fence-sitting, quietly quitting, disengaged group accounts for a whopping 62%.
Based on my work helping companies to improve productivity for over the last 25 years across seven countries, I know for a fact that engaging the fence-sitting quietly-quitting majority is not that difficult. UNLOCK, is about how we can move this mountain.
Three tips to UNLOCK the latent pool of resources you’ve got – the diamonds under your feet:
- Involving the seemingly disengaged is the secret. Infuse them carefully into small groups led by the diligent few.
- Sharing the success of these small groups with their peers creates an infectiously positive culture. A rising tide lift all boats.
- Repeating this cycle creates a flywheel that shifts the fence-sitters to be engaged. Move the middle: move the mountain.
